Dragons, fools and fire-breathing tickets in “Cuentos”
On Sunday, October 15, in the Hop's Spaulding Auditorium, storyteller David Gonzalez and accompanying musicians combined language learning, Latin music and life lessons into a single show: Cuentos, meaning “stories.” Wilson “Chembo” Corniel, a Grammy-nominated percussionist, took to the stage to perform a solo on his congas. Willie Martinez, a renowned Latin jazz drummer, joined Corniel in a duet of drums. Daniel Kelly completed the trio on piano, and the three played an energetic opening song for the performance. The Emerson String Quartet: Connecting Past and Present
Music communicates emotion; in its well attended Hopkins Center concert on Saturday, September 30, the Emerson String Quartet managed to capture the emotion within quartet pieces through the players' synchronicity and delicacy of performance. As recipients of multiple honors (including nine Grammy awards) and 40 years of experience playing as an ensemble, they promised to offer an incredible performance. Over my years at Dartmouth, I’ve made a point of visiting each of the student workshops in spite of having begun as a complete novice at wood, metal and clay. Now that I’ve reached senior year, my parting advice to the ’21s is this: take advantage of at least one of the student workshops during your time at Dartmouth. The student workshops provide Dartmouth students access to equipment, materials and available instructors that are more difficult to find once leaving campus.
