Dartmouth’s very own Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble performed the next song of the night, Haitian Fight Song by Charles Mingus. The Barbary Coast’s new director Taylor Ho Bynum made his debut by kicking off the jazz tune with a dynamic trumpet solo. Haitian Fight Song was full of impressive student solos as well, with soprano and tenor saxophone, trombone and voice taking the center stage. The song was exciting and soulful, with blaring chords and lively melodic lines. While the members of Del Sol Quartet had relied on communicating with each other, the members of the Coast had a strong connection with the director. The students followed Bynum’s every move, watching him before entering, and allowing the music to swell and wane with his arms.
