Dartmouth and the surrounding region has the chance to watch – and learn from – one of the world’s most exciting contemporary circuses, as part of the SHIFT festival (June 21 through 30).
Based in Brisbane, Australia, and currently touring North America, Circa Contemporary Circus brings its internationally acclaimed show Humans, a heart-stopping exploration of body, space, force and balance. Using only their incredibly trained bodies, this corps of artist-athletes builds towers, flies through the air, twists, turns and tumbles – playing with the laws of physics and ratcheting up the tension between us and the space we move through. Performances are Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29, 8 pm, and Sunday, June 30, at 3 pm, in The Moore Theater.
Bring young people! Youth tickets to this and all SHIFT shows are 40 percent off!
Since 2004, Circa has performed in 40 countries to over a million people, across six continents. Pioneering how extreme physicality can create powerful and moving performances, Circa pushes the boundaries of the art form, blurring the lines between movement, dance, theater and circus, and leading the way with a diverse range of thrilling creations that “redraw the limits to which circus can aspire” (The Age) and are “a revolution in the spectacle of circus.” (Les Echos). Featuring an ensemble of exceptional, multi-skilled circus artists, Circa is a regular fixture at leading festivals and venues in New York, London, Berlin and Montreal with seasons at Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Barbican Centre, Les Nuits de Fourvière, Chamäleon Theatre as well as major Australian Festivals.
Want to learn from these exceptional circus artists? Circa’s visionary artistic director Yaron Lifschitz gives a public master class on Tuesday, June 25, 6–7:30 pm, Straus Dance Studio, Berry Sports Complex. He’ll share about the building blocks of Circa’s incredible technique: Lifschitz’s 4 Space Theory, a dynamic improvisational and dramaturgical toolkit. If that sounds like more than you’re ready for, why not try a free Drop-in Circus Skills Workshop with Circa members, Saturday, June 29, 1-2 pm, on the Dartmouth Green. All ages and skill levels are welcome to come by and try their hands—and hips—at juggling and hula-hooping, under the tutelage of these amazing yet approachable performers. (Rain location: Top of the Hop).
